Is texting and driving illegal in Virginia?

My daughter has a habit of texting while driving and I’m trying to get her to stop. She says it’s not against the law. Can you tell me, is texting while driving illegal in Virginia?

As of January 1, 2021, Virginia has started enforcing a new handheld cell phone law that bans texting while driving.
Breaking this law can result in the following penalties:
  • First-time offense $125 fine
  • Subsequent offense(s) $250 fine
  • Work zone offense $250 fine
  • Violation in addition to reckless driving Possible $2,500 fine, suspension of license for six months, and 12 months jail time
