I’ve just gotten a new job and am moving to Milwaukee from out of state. I have renters insurance in my current state, but I’m tired of paying for it. Do I really need to have renters insurance in Wisconsin?

Wow, hopefully, you’re not moving from anywhere too warm and sunny. Those Wisconsin winters are no joke!
The short answer is no. There is currently no federal law that legally requires Wisconsin tenants to carry renters insurance. However, as part of the lease agreement, some landlords may require renters insurance.
The easiest way to find out if you’ll have to have renters insurance is by contacting your new landlord before moving. If it’s not part of your lease agreement, you don’t have to keep renters insurance. That said, it can be beneficial to have insurance to protect your personal property.
