Is raspberry pi car electrical engineering?

My neighbor is an engineer, and he recently retrofitted his car into a Raspberry Pi car. It’s really cool, and has a computer right in the dash. I’d like to do it myself, but I’m not an engineer. Is Raspberry Pi car electrical engineering?

Great question! Raspberry Pi is a computer that can be added to almost any car built after 1996, creating what some call a Raspberry Pi car. You don’t necessarily need to be an electrical engineer to do this car modification, although knowledge of cars, electrical systems, and computers will be very helpful. However, another easier option is to purchase the AutoPi, which was specifically designed to add an entire entertainment system to your vehicle.
Raspberry Pi is a low-cost computer that plugs into a computer monitor or TV, and is about the size of a credit card. It’s an excellent starter for people interested in learning more about computer programming, and is often used for teaching programming languages.
Because of its low-cost and versatility, the Raspberry Pi is a great choice for people who want to add a car computer to their car. Through connecting the computer to the OBD-II port, the same port that is used to diagnose issues when your Check Engine light comes on, this computer can be used to monitor your car’s vitals. It’s also useful for media like movies, Spotify, and other functions that you might not otherwise get with an older vehicle.
Because Raspberry Pi is such a basic computer, having computer programming skills will make a modification like this much easier. However, there are guides online you can take advantage of, as well as a new product called AutoPi.
AutoPi, which was a recent success on Kickstarter, lets you build a Raspberry Pi car computer with a touchscreen. This computer can then be plugged into any vehicle with an OBD-II port. Nearly any vehicle built in or after 1996 has this port.
