Is personal watercraft insurance the same thing as boat insurance?

How do you know what type of boat insurance to get? Is watercraft insurance the same as boat insurance? I am thinking about buying a used fishing boat off of Craigslist and I know I will need insurance for it before it goes in the water.

“I hope you get a great deal on your fishing boat! Yes, watercraft is a general term used to describe the different types of boat policies, which include:
  • Boat insurance
  • Yacht insurance
  • Personal watercraft insurance
The type of coverage you need will depend on the size and speed of your new boat. If your fishing boat is under 30’ long, then you will want to look into boat insurance. Insurance companies have different terms for their policies, such as bass boat, fishing boat or powerboat, but they fall under the same kind of insurance.
Before you buy a policy, work with an agent and make sure to understand what is covered. They will want to know the engine size, how you intend to use it, and whether you will be sailing on inland waters or open seas.
Boat insurance is pretty affordable; the average annual price ranging from $250-$470, depending on where you live in the country.
