Is Mazda owned by Ford?

Does Ford own Mazda? Someone told me that Ford owns Mazda but I thought that Mazda was from Japan. Is this not true?

You’re right to be skeptical! The short answer to this question is no,
Mazda
is not owned by Ford. Mazda is technically owned by the Mazda Motor Corporation, which is based in Japan. However, there is a history of a financial relationship between the two companies as far back as 2015.
The Ford Motor Company bought stakes in Mazda in 1979. By 1995, Ford owned over 33% of Mazda. In 2015, however, Ford sold all of its Mazda shares, thereby ending any possibility of a takeover.
