Is lane splitting illegal in Pennsylvania?
I was visiting my parents in Pennsylvania last week, and I noticed that motorcyclists would lane split during rush hour to get through traffic quicker. It’s illegal where I’m from, but is it legal in Pennsylvania?

is never fun or ideal, and many motorcyclists will sneak between vehicles to get around faster. However, lane splitting in Pennsylvania
is illegal and can lead to severe injuries, accidents, and other legal problems. Many motorists are unsure of the difference between lane splitting and lane sharing, making road decision-making tough.
- Lane sharing is when two motorcyclists ride side by side in a single lane, which, in Pennsylvania, is legal.
- Lane-splitting, also called white lining, is when a motorcyclist drives between two cars on the road, following the dotted white line between lanes; this often happens when a biker wants to pass another vehicle but cannot safely get around them .
Lane sharing complies with Pennsylvania law, as motorcyclists ride within designated lanes, not between or alongside them.
Currently,
California
is the only state where lane-splitting is legal, although Utah
and Hawaii
have modified legalized versions of lane splitting. Because Pennsylvania observes the modified comparative fault rules, both drivers could be at fault for part of an accident if you’re involved in an incident with a biker who’s lane-splitting—and the penalties are often steep, including an increase in
