Is it safe to rent from Turo?

I'm going to be visiting LA and I've browsed the car rental marketplace, Turo. It looks like I might be able to get a better car for cheaper, but it is a safe alternative?

“If you’re worried about renting from Turo, it may help you to know that the experience is not that different from renting a car through a traditional rental agency.
You can browse a selection of cars online and pick one that fits your price point.
Turo will offer you different levels of car insurance but equips all its drivers with basic liability insurance and roadside assistance, so you can feel safe on the road.
If you’ve used services like Airbnb, Lyft, or Uber, you already know what to expect with renting directly from hosts. If you’re still skeptical, you can always read user reviews and see what others have to say about their experience.”
