Is it legal to convert a car to electric?
Instead of buying an electric car, can I legally convert my existing vehicle to an electric one?

It is possible to convert your car to electric, but you’ll need to re-register it with the Department of Motor Vehicles before you can legally drive it.
In order to convert and register your own
electric car
, you’ll have to follow the rules specific to your state or locality. For example, any vehicle registered in California
can be converted into a 100% electric drivetrain as long as onboard electric batteries supply all power.Some other rules for converting your car to electric include:
- The combustion and fuel systems must be removed prior to inspection
- The vehicle must be able to arrive at the inspection site using its own electric power.
- The inspector must be able to confirm that the vehicle has adequate battery capacity for 100% electric operation.
- The referee of the inspection will sign a “Statement of Facts” form upon completion, which can then be returned to the Department of Motor Vehicles to be officially registered as an EV.
