Is it illegal to not change your address on your driver's license when you move?
I tend to move around a lot, about once a year, and I feel like I constantly have to change my driver's license. What happens if I just keep it the same? What benefit is there to changing it?
“Most states consider it illegal to not update your driver’s license and address, even if you move around frequently. When you move, it is essential to change:
- the address on your license.
- the registration of your car.
- your insurance policy.
The first step will be to contact your insurance company and update your address. Since every state has different rates and coverage requirements, the policy needs to be rated for the correct state to ensure that you have adequate coverage.
One benefit of keeping your policy up to date is that, depending on where you move, there is a chance your premium will decrease!
Once your insurance policy is updated, you can take the ID card to the DMV and change your vehicle’s registration and your driver’s license.
An extra trip to the DMV is a lot of work, but updating this information comes with benefits. Some states charge property taxes on your vehicle. If you don’t change the registration, you could be stuck paying extra taxes for no reason. By updating your license, you are also updating your polling location when voting in local or national elections.
Big life changes like moving are the perfect time to re-evaluate your insurance provider and shop around for cheaper car insurance.

Do I have to change the registration on my car when I move out of state?
I am moving from Texas to Georgia and was wondering if I had to register my car and change my driver's license. I will only be in Georgia for about two years; renewing my plates and registration online for Texas will be much easier for me. Is there any way to wait until I get back to Texas?

Do you have to update your license when moving into a new state?
What happens if you don't change your driver's license when you move? I just renewed my New York license and then moved to a new state. I don't feel like going through the hassle at the DMV, getting a new picture taken, and paying for a new license. What will happen if I keep mine?

If I haven't updated my registration yet, will the insurance company deny my claim?
I moved to Minnesota about a week ago and haven't had a chance to update my insurance policy or car registration. I was in a car accident yesterday that I know wasn't my fault. Can the insurance company deny my claim since the accident was in a different state than listed on my policy?
