Is it against the law to sleep in your car at Walmart?

I’m moving from Seattle to Miami for a fresh start. The cost to move all my stuff is already astronomical, so I’m trying to save money on the road trip. Instead of renting a hotel room, can I sleep in my car at Walmart stores along the way?

Contrary to popular belief, parking at a Walmart overnight is technically illegal. However, Walmart rarely hassles anyone who sleeps overnight in their parking lot, provided you keep your profile to a minimum and don’t cause a ruckus.
In the off-chance that a Walmart tells you to leave, you must find a different place to sleep overnight. Otherwise, you risk getting a trespassing charge.
Some alternatives might include:
  • Truck stops
  • Gas stations with large parking lots
  • 24-hour restaurant parking lots
  • Rest areas, if legal in the state you’re in
Once you arrive in Miami, remember to switch your insurance to a
Florida
policy. Every state has different insurance requirements, so the sooner you make the switch the better.
Since Florida also may have different insurers, shop around with the
