Is expired registration a moving violation in Texas?

I just realized that my registration expired a month ago. If I’m pulled over, can I be charged with a moving violation in Texas for expired registration?

Yes, expired registration may be considered a moving violation in
Texas
. A moving violation is any unlawful act committed during the operation of a motor vehicle, and driving without valid vehicle registration is illegal.
  • The Texas Transportation Code (Sec. 502.407) provides an easy fix—you simply have to renew your registration within 20 days of receiving the citation
  • The cost will be greater than if you had remembered to renew your vehicle registration on time
  • Besides the registration renewal fee itself, you may have to pay an additional 20% delinquency surcharge, a $20 reimbursement fee, and up to $200 for the citation itself
Take note: Your registration will only be good for 11 months or so—that is to say, your next renewal date will be 12 months from the original expiry date, not 12 months from the date you complete a late renewal. Better hurry!
