Is driving to Alaska worth it?

I’m headed to Alaska for an amazing six-month vacation, and I was thinking about making a long road trip out of it by driving there instead of renting a car once I arrive. Would the drive be worth it?

It may be worth it, but keep in mind that you’ll need to allot time for the drive there and the drive back. It’s about 3,000 miles just from northern
California
to
Alaska
, so to make it more than just a trip spent peering through the windshield, you’ll need at least a couple weeks each way.
To determine whether driving to Alaska is worth it, think about the following questions:
  • Do you love driving? 3,000 miles is a lot, and that’s just the Canada part.
  • Do you love or want to love Canada? Did we mention at least 3,000 miles of Canada?
  • Is your schedule flexible? Flat tires and breakdowns are real, and they can put a serious hitch in your giddyup.
If you answered “yes” to all of these questions, then strap in because you’re driving to the Last Frontier. If you answered “no” to even one of them, you’re likely to be more irked by the drive than inspired.
