Is driving the Ring of Kerry dangerous?

I’m heading to Ireland with my Uncle Seamus, who hasn’t been back in years. He’s insisting we drive the Ring of Kerry, but **I** will have to drive (because he never learned)—is driving the Ring of Kerry difficult?

First off, driving the Ring of Kerry on the Inveragh Peninsula isn’t dangerous, but it is 120 miles long and takes a full day to drive. It’s very popular for its unparalleled Irish coastal views and can be done at a leisurely pace, with plenty of stops on the left-hand side of the road to take in the views.
Some things to remember when doing the Ring of Kerry drive:
  • Left-hand side: Remember, in Ireland they drive on the left-hand side of the road. So long as you hold a valid U.S. driver’s license, you’ll be able to legally drive in Ireland.
  • Drive counter-clockwise: If you drive the Ring of Kerry counter-clockwise, you can easily pull over and stop at scenic spots overlooking the water. Do note that there will be lots of tour buses on this route, so leave before 9:00 am in order to not get stuck behind them!
Beyond the verdant beauty you’ll see on your Ring of Kerry tour, here are some highlights to keep an eye out for:
  • Killarney National Park: Go through gorgeous mountain passes and gawk at beautiful lakes and lush forests.
  • Skellig Islands: Once you hit Waterville, you’ll get incredible views of the Atlantic, along with the stunning Skellig Islands.
  • Kerry Cliffs: Pay 4 Euros and follow the sign pointing you to “Kerry’s most spectacular cliffs”—Kerry Cliffs offer jaw-dropping views and are easily worth it.
  • Portmagee: At this point, Uncle Seamus will be hungry, so stop in the charming town of Portmagee for lunch. Then, if he needs to go, point Seamus to the loo next to the parking lot in Portmagee Village Public Facility—it was rated Ireland’s Top Toilet (Runner Up) in 2002!
We here at Jerry are certain that you’ll have a grand ol’ time on the Emerald Isle with your Uncle Seamus as you chauffeur him around the gorgeous Ring of Kerry. If he doesn’t enjoy himself? Next time, make him drive!
