Is driving in Spain easy?

I’ve planned a trip to Spain to participate in La Tomatina and join in the world’s largest tomato fight in July. I’ll be renting a car and touring the country while there, so I was wondering—is driving in Spain easy?

We here at Jerry are quite jealous of the fact that you’ll be able to pelt others (and get pelted yourself) with tomatoes at La Tomatina in Buñol, Spain, in July. As for getting around Spain, driving is quite easy, especially if you’re touring the country on Spain’s well-maintained system of highways.
Spain’s highway network is very well-maintained, offers easy connections from city to city, and isn’t very crowded when compared to the US highway system—speed limits are set to 120 km/hour on Spain’s main highways or about 75 miles per hour. Driving to various beautiful seaside spots or taking a trip through the mountains is a breeze by car. Beware though, as Spanish drivers are known to be aggressive.
You’ll be happy to know that Spaniards also drive on the right-hand side of the road, so you’ll be able to hop behind the wheel and feel comfortable on the road. As an American, you’ll need to get an International Driving Permit to drive in Spain. This must be acquired in the US before you travel, as you will not be able to get one in Spain—you can get an IDP through AAA or the American Automobile Touring Alliance.
Driving is more difficult in urban areas, especially in big cities such as Barcelona and Madrid. You might want to park the car while in town, as the public transit system is excellent, efficient, and easy to use.
Once you’ve returned to the US (with tomato juice seeping out of your pores, no doubt), be sure to protect your car stateside with a robust
