Congratulations on the job! I totally understand how it feels to have your first job after college, and a consistent work schedule can be really appealing. But commutes are never fun, whether they’re ten minutes or an hour.
But is it worth it to drive the hour there and back? That depends on a number of different things. Consider the pros and cons, because ultimately, everyone’s situation is different, and there is no universal answer.
What about your job do you think is worth the distance? Is the pay good? Could you get comparable pay closer to home? Is there more opportunity with this job that you can’t find within a shorter distance?
Next, consider the cons. Whether the hour-long commute is due to traffic or distance, you’ll be putting wear and tear on your car and using up gas. How much would you be spending to make this commute, and is it worth the money compared to what you’re making? Do long commutes or long car trips give you anxiety? What could the long-term impact of that be?
There’s always a silver lining to every cloud, but there’s also always a cloud for every silver lining. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide whether the commute is worth it. If this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, it could very well be worth it. But if this is just another job that you could easily get anywhere else, it might not be.
If you decide to go for it, you may want to consider some additional insurance coverage
, particularly mechanical breakdown insurance
. It can help cover the cost of any major mechanical breakdown in your car, which may be brought on by excessive commuting. Not every insurance company carries it, but Jerry
can help you find it!
