Is driving a forklift similar to driving a car?

I’m considering applying for a job, but one of the requirements is to be forklift certified. I’ve never driven a forklift before, but I know how to drive a car, and this is my dream job. How similar is driving a forklift to driving a car?

First of all, go out there and pursue your dream! If it means learning how to drive a forklift, that is well within your abilities if you can already drive a car. That being said, there are some big differences between driving a car and a forklift that you should consider:
  • Forklifts can turn in tight spaces with a high level of precision.
  • The majority of a forklift’s weight is carried in the back of the vehicle.
  • Forklift steering is much less responsive than car steering.
  • Forklift operators often have to drive in reverse because the front view is partially obstructed
A forklift is an extremely powerful and heavy piece of machinery, and it is important to understand the inherent dangers of operating one. With that being said, many jobs offer to pay for your forklift training and certification, so it’s well worth contacting the company to see what they offer!
