Is building insurance the same as home insurance?

I am about to buy my first house and am trying to figure out my insurance needs. I keep hearing about home insurance, but I also know there’s something called building insurance. Is there a difference? Is building insurance the same as home insurance?

Good question! Building insurance is usually a part of home insurance, although it can also be purchased separately.
Building insurance covers the physical structure of the house, along with fixtures in the bathroom and kitchen. This is just part of what most home insurance policies cover.
Homeowners insurance
usually also includes:
  • Contents insurance: This covers your personal possessions.
  • Liability insurance: This pays for legal expenses if someone is hurt on your property.
  • Loss of use insurance: If you’re displaced after a covered peril damages your home, this will pay for your expenses.
It’s usually recommended to get a full home insurance policy over just building insurance—it could save you tens of thousands of dollars (if not more) after an accident.
