I’m secretly car shopping for my daughter, so I can surprise her for Christmas with a new first car. She learned to drive in my Nissan sedan, so I’m hoping to get her a similar vehicle for her own. Is a Nissan Sentra a good first car?

US News ranked the 2022 Nissan Sentra 7 out of 11 compact cars, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the Sentra 5/5 stars for safety. On top of that, it’s got excellent fuel economy—a combined 33 mpg!
If you’re looking at a used Sentra for your first-time driver, you shouldn’t have to worry about costly maintenance or repairs, either. On average, Sentras cost less to own and drive. The exact features will depend on the model year and trim level of the specific Sentra you’re considering—but on the whole, Nissan Sentras make solidly reliable first cars.
