Is a Mazda 2 a good first car?

I’ve been dreaming of owning a Mazda since I was a tiny tot. I turn 16 next week, and after I get my license, I plan to buy a used Mazda 2 for my first car. Is this a good idea?

How exciting—best of luck with getting your license! The Mazda 2 is a great first car. It has high scores for reliability and affordability—plus it’s fun to drive!
Here’s more on the Mazda 2:
  • The Mazda 2 is a sporty, subcompact hatchback that was released in the U.S. in 2010 and discontinued in 2014. It was resold as the Scion iA and Toyota Yaris in 2019.
  • The latest model, the 2014 Mazda 2, seats five people, gets an EPA-estimated 29 city/35 highway mpg, and is offered in front-wheel drive.
  • The 2014 Mazda 2 was a finalist in U.S.News’ Best Subcompact Car for the Money award. J.D. Power rates it 3 out of 5 for reliability, and RepairPal rates it 4.5 out of 5, ranking it third out of 21 subcompact cars for cost, frequency, and severity of repairs.
A 2014 Mazda 2 typically retails for between $9,000 and **$10,000—but before you decide to purchase that new (to you!) Mazda 2, don’t forget to estimate your
