A furnace is one of the most important appliances in your house, especially if you live in a colder climate. The obvious difference is that electric furnaces are powered by electricity, while gas furnaces are powered by natural gas. There are other considerations to keep in mind, though.
Electric furnace pros:
  • Typically easier maintenance
  • No carbon monoxide risk
  • Often quieter than a gas furnace
  • Generally more ideal for warmer climates
Electric furnace cons:
  • Electricity is typically a more expensive utility
  • Generally less efficient at heating
Gas furnace pros:
  • More efficient at heating
  • Natural gas is often a cheaper utility
  • Generally more ideal for colder climates
Gas furnace cons:
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning risk
  • Complicated installation
  • More maintenance requirements
