Is a front license plate required in Connecticut?

I’ll be moving to Connecticut for a new job soon and will be getting a new car! I like the clean look without the front license plate but wanted to check if the front plate is required in Connecticut?

Congratulations on your new job! To echo your sentiment, we also love the clean “no front plate” look on cars.
The Connecticut General Statutes does not require front license plates to be displayed. However, there are a few regulations you must follow:
  • The rear license plate must be clearly displayed at all times
  • If you are issued two plates from the Connecticut DMV, you must display them in the front and rear
  • The renewal date tags must be clearly displayed on the upper right corner
If you are buying your car in Connecticut, there are three plate options. This includes:
  • Standard license plates for all vehicles
  • Classic vehicle plates for vehicles over 20 years of age
  • Special plates with ten different categories
If you are getting your car from out-of-state, you will need to visit an official emissions test center to have your vehicle inspected before going to the DMV. Bring the inspection report to the DMV within 60 days to register your vehicle.
