How wide is a highway lane?

I’m going to be towing a large flatbed trailer full of construction supplies soon, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to load everything so it’s not too wide on the highway. How wide is a highway lane?

It’s always good to make sure you’re ready for
safe highway driving
when taking on such a large towing project.
A highway lane should be 12 feet wide to meet Federal recommendations as set by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). However, highway lane widths can vary by location and terrain. For example, highway lanes on a bridge may be thinner than highway lanes on a long stretch of open land.
The average car is a little more than seven feet wide, including side-view mirrors. Buses, fire trucks, and other large vehicles are closer to nine-and-a-half feet in width, so a 12-foot highway lane makes a lot of sense.
However, any tow load wider than eight-and-a-half feet could be considered a wide tow load. Check your local and state regulations to make sure your tow load is up to code with the proper signs and permits. Then check your
car insurance
policy to make sure your coverage is prepared for the journey!
