How to transfer a title in Washington?

What's the process for transferring a car title in Washington state? I'm trying to sell my car but don't know how to transfer the title. What’s the process here?

In Washington, you need to go to your local DMV with the title’s information, a completed bill of sale form, and transaction report within 15 days of the sale.
It’s pretty simple! Here’s what you need to know about a title transfer in Washington:
  • Title: Once you complete and exchange the title, the document should be notarized and signed by both parties. This will require both the buyer’s and seller’s ID.
  • License plates: Remove the old license plates.
  • Documents: Bring all the documents including the seller’s
    bill of sale
and the buyer’s certificate of ownership (which should be notarized) to be filed at the DMV.
  • Identification: The new owners must provide ID and
    residency
documents along with the other papers at the DMV.
  • Fee: Pay the title transfer fee — around $15 plus tax as of 2023.
There are two options for filing a title transfer in Washington:
  • In-person at a vehicle licensing office
  • By mail to the address on the paperwork
After the paperwork is filed, the new owner will receive the new title within 10 weeks.
If you’re the seller, remember to
remove the vehicle
from your insurance policy. Leaving active insurance on a recently sold car will hold you accountable for any incidents the new driver might cause.
