How to know if your car battery is dead?

I’ve had my car battery for about five years, so I know it’s reaching the end of its life. Right now, it’s cranking along just fine, but I don’t want to get stranded with a dead battery. What are some signs that your car battery is dead?

Since your battery is already five years old, its days are numbered. However, you can often tell if your battery is dead by looking for signs such as a slow start, a clicking noise, or even bad smells.
If you’re worried about your car battery dying, look for these telltale signs of a dead battery:
  • Jumpstarting the battery
doesn’t give your battery a consistent charge.
  • The vehicle starts then immediately dies
  • A smell of rotten eggs emanating from the battery
  • The radio or windshield wipers won’t work in the accessories position
  • A clicking sound
  • Dim headlights
  • A slow start
If you notice any of these symptoms of a dead battery, take your car (if possible) or your battery to a local auto parts store where they’ll test the battery for free.
To avoid getting stranded in the future due to a faulty battery or just from leaving your dome light on, add towing and labor coverage to your car insurance or sign up for Jerry’s roadside assistance program.
