How to find out if your car is insured?

I live in Texas. We had a fire in our garage while we were on vacation—our car was sitting in the garage and got ruined. How do I check and see what’s insured? My documentation was in the glove box, and it’s safe to say that it’s gone now.

We’re sorry to hear about the fire. Even though your
insurance documents
went up in smoke, don’t worry.
You can first try calling an agent or checking to see if you have digital proof of insurance to access your policy number.
Luckily for you, the state of
Texas
also tracks individual insurance policies. You can go to the secretary of state office closest to you and ask them about your insurance.
If you have
comprehensive coverage
on your policy, your car should be covered against fire damage. If you only had the state-mandated limits, however, you shouldn’t expect a full payout.
While this isn’t something you should worry about right now, you might be faced with higher insurance rates in the future due to having filed a large claim.
When you’re recovered from this ordeal, try doing some comparison shopping with

to find insurance savings—all you need is 60 seconds and a smartphone.
