I moved to New York. I’m selling my car and do not need my car insurance anymore. How do I cancel my car insurance policy?

To cancel your
car insurance
 policy, you can simply call your car insurance agent. However, your provider may require you to pay a cancellation fee and sign a form saying you are canceling your insurance.
When you cancel your car insurance plan, make sure you:
  • Confirm when the plan will be canceled as some providers will require you to give notice before cancelling
  • Receive confirmation of the cancelation
  • Ask about refunds for prepaid premiums
Some states have license plate requirements, so check with your local DMV before you cancel your policy. You may need to surrender your license plates before you cancel your insurance.
