How to beat a reckless driving ticket?

I was out driving around with my friends last week and wasn’t paying attention to how fast I was going. When I got pulled over, I figured I was going to get a speeding ticket, but I got a reckless driving ticket instead! I really don’t want that on my driving record. How can I get my reckless driving ticket dismissed?

There’s certainly no better way to ruin your day than by getting pulled over—receiving a reckless driving ticket only makes it worse. Luckily, there are a few ways to beat a reckless driving ticket—you’ll just need to be willing to fight it in court.
Though you can represent yourself in court, it’s not advisable. For the best chance at fighting any ticket, you’ll need to hire a good attorney. A lawyer with experience in traffic court will be more familiar with the legal system and better able to strategize a defense and communicate in court.
Reckless driving means that you were aware of how you were driving and the risks associated with it, but chose to continue driving dangerously. Depending on the circumstances surrounding the incident you were ticketed for, you have a few options for how to proceed:
  • Argue that you were negligent
  • Argue that you were
    distracted
  • Ague that the radar gun wasn’t calibrated or used correctly (if applicable)
  • Argue that you were driving recklessly out of necessity (i.e., it was an emergency)
The goal should be to plead the charge down to a lesser offense as opposed to getting it dismissed entirely. A good attorney should be able to get the charge reduced in all but the most flagrant cases.
Of course, even a lesser charge will likely still add
demerit points
to your license—and that means increased insurance costs. To find the best deal on car insurance after a traffic ticket, consider switching insurance providers with
