How often should you replace your car’s air filter?

I was visiting my parents this weekend and saw that my dad was changing the air filter in his truck, which got me trying to remember the last time I changed mine—how often should you replace a car’s air filter?

You should replace your car’s air filter once each year or after every 15,000 to 20,000 miles—consult your owner’s manual for make and model-specific estimates.
The once-a-year recommendation is based on standard urban and semi-urban driving habits and conditions, which means you may need to replace your car’s air filter more frequently if you often drive on unpaved roads or live in a dry, dusty place.
If particulate matter is allowed to sufficiently build-up in the filter, it can cause a host of other issues, including:
  • Engine misfires
  • Worsening gas mileage
  • Reduction in horsepower
  • Black exhaust smoke
For this reason, youshould have your car’s air filter inspected regularly throughout the year to ensure that it is doing its job correctly.
Taking care of your vehicle’s scheduled maintenance is important—but so is making sure it’s covered by the right insurance policy. Licensed
