How often should you drive a car?
My mother doesn’t drive anymore, but she still has her car. Is that okay? How often do you need to drive a car?

Getting older can mean slower reflexes and dulled senses, so it’s perfectly understandable to drive less as you age. However, you should drive your car at least a few times each month and for no less than 10 miles in total. Additionally, you’ll want some of that driving to be at speeds above 50 mph.
While you’re at it, there are a few other things to do if your car will be sitting for an extended period:
- **Buy acar cover**—between birds, tree sap, and the weather, there’s a lot that can damage your car’s paint if it’s left alone for long enough.
- **Check your tires**—especially as the temperature changes, your tires can lose pressure and that makes for less-than-reliable handling in snow and rain.
- Clean the interior—perishable food can spoil and electronics can be damaged by heat, so be sure your car is empty before letting it sit.
Hopefully, these tips will keep your mother’s car in good condition for the times when she feels like getting out of the house.
