How often should you change your windshield wipers?

Help me settle this debate with my father. I just bought my first car—a Toyota Camry. He’s telling me that I should replace my windshield wipers every six months, but I read that you can go up to 12 months without replacing them. Who’s right? How often should you change your windshield wipers?

Well, you both are correct. The general recommendation is to change windshield wiper blades every six to 12 months.
That said, some wiper blades are designed to last only six months, while other manufacturers say their blades can last more than 12 months.
How soon you should replace your
Camry
’s wiper blades will depend upon the type of wiper blades you’re talking about as well as other factors:
  • What are the blades made out of? Silicone blades last longer than conventional rubber blades, for instance.
  • How often do you use your wipers? If you live in a place where it rains or snows a lot, you’ll need to replace your wiper blades more often than someone who rarely turns on their wipers.
  • What is the climate like? Excessive heat, cold, and/or lack of moisture can cause blade materials to break down more quickly.
  • Do you park outside? The sun’s rays will crack rubber blades, so if you park most of the day in direct sunlight, your blades may need to be replaced more often.
