How often should I put air in my car tires?

How frequently should I check my tire pressure? I don’t know much about maintenance, but I want to learn as much as I can. Starting with the basics, I know I will eventually need to put more air in the tires, but I'm wondering if there is a timeline I should follow.

It’s great to hear you want to learn about
maintaining your vehicle
because good maintenance is the key to extending your car’s life.
There is no strict timeline on how often you should put air in your car tires, but here’s a helpful rule of thumb:
Check your tire pressure
at least once a month and add air as needed.
It is tricky to say how often you should put air in your tires because it depends on the weather where you live:
  • If you live in a city where the temperature is consistent year round: Your tires will drop roughly one pound of pressure per month.
  • If you live in a city that experiences big swings in temperature in the summer and winter: Your tire pressure can drop or rise drastically within a few days.
Pro tip: To get an accurate reading of your air pressure, invest in a tire gauge. Avoid relying on the ones attached to gas station air compressors because they are overused and have been dropped, so they may not provide the most accurate reading.
