How often you’ll need to charge your new
electric car
will depend on your EPA range rating. The estimated driving range and charge time of your electric car will be available on the Fuel Economy and Environment Label or at
fueleconomy.gov
, but mileage may vary depending on:
  • Battery age
  • Extreme temperatures and weather conditions
  • Elevation
  • Speed
  • Charge capacity
For example, if you’re driving a new
Tesla Model 3
Long Range AWD, the EPA range rating is 358 miles.
On a full charge, you should be able to drive an estimated 358 miles before needing to charge again, but extreme cold, extreme heat, inclement weather, driving uphill, battery age, and going high speeds can deplete your range faster than the EPA estimated mileage.
In order to optimize your battery’s life and performance, it is also recommended that electric cars are not charged fully to 100% every time they are charged. Limiting your charging capacity to 80 or 90% will cut into your range, but it will prolong your battery’s life overall.
Calculating car range can be complicated, but getting the best deal on your
car insurance
doesn’t have to be.
