How much water a running toilet could use and leak is as much as one gallon every hour. If you let it continue, that could amount to 168 gallons of water lost after just a week, or up to 750 gallons after a month! And that’s just for a slow leak.
On the higher end, your running toilet could use as much as 4.5 gallons in a minute. If that’s the case, you’re running the risk of wasting thousands of gallons of water every single day.
In addition to wasting water, a running toilet could leave you with a significant spike on your water bill.
You might want to check the inside of the toilet’s tank for an easy fix—sometimes the seal that lets the tank water drain into the toilet bowl can move out of place. If you need to replace the seal, you can find relatively inexpensive replacements at hardware stores.
If you’re not sure what’s causing your toilet to constantly run, you’ll want to have a plumber take a look. In the meantime, you can use the toilet’s shut-off valve, which is usually found where your toilet’s water line connects to the wall, to curb some of that water waste—and save yourself some money, too.
