How much time do you have to get car insurance after buying a car?

I'm a new driver and I just bought my first car from a private seller. I know I need insurance to be able to drive safely on the road, so how long do I have until I need to get car insurance?

“Congrats on the new car! Since this is your first car, you’ll want to have car insurance lined up before you drive the car off the lot—and since a private seller won’t check your insurance, it’s your responsibility to have insurance lined up before you drive away. Otherwise, you’ll be driving illegally.
In the future, when you buy another car, you’ll ideally want to contact your
car insurance
company before you buy the car to transfer your car insurance from the old vehicle to the new one.
However, most car insurance companies have a grace period of up to a month for you to
transfer insurance to a new car
.
