How much oil does your car need?

While driving earlier, a light on my dashboard came on that looks like an oil can. I checked the oil level and it was very low but I have no idea how much to add. How much oil does my car need?

Cars typically require between four and six quarts, although larger vehicles may require a bit more. This information can be found in your car’s maintenance manual, online, or by asking a professional.
However, because your car is not entirely out of oil but just low, you are not going to want to add the entire amount your car requires. You should start by adding a quart or two and then checking the level again. Be careful not to add too much, as this can cause engine problems. And always ask a professional if you are not comfortable performing the maintenance yourself.
After adding oil to the car yourself, or bringing it to a mechanic, it would be a good idea to have it inspected to ensure there are no other underlying issues. Adhering to a
basic car maintenance schedule
is a great way to prolong the life of your vehicle.
While you wait for the inspection to be completed, it could be worthwhile to look over your car insurance policy and compare quotes to make sure you are not overpaying. If you’d rather leave the hard work of gathering quotes to someone else, use
