How much liability coverage do I need for renters insurance?

I’m moving into my new apartment and my landlord is requiring that I get some kind of renters insurance. She just hasn’t specified the coverage amounts I need. For starters, how much liability insurance coverage do I need for renters insurance?

Congrats on moving to a new place! When it comes to renters insurance coverage, the amount of liability coverage you need depends on your lifestyle and how much property you own.
Many renters policies come with a standard $100,000 liability limit. This means your insurance will pay up to $100,000 to cover damages resulting from:
  • someone getting injured in your apartment.
  • you breaking something of a neighbor’s or landlord’s.
  • your pet biting someone.
  • legal fees associated with these situations.
Some renters will want to opt for a higher amount of liability coverage, such as $250,000, $300,000, or rarely more. A higher liability limit is only worth it if:
  • you plan on entertaining large groups of people and/or are hiring expensive services for the event.
  • you have a lot of stuff (e.g., assets worth over $100,000) in your apartment.
