How much is it to add a named driver to a car insurance policy?

I'm going to be sharing my car with my friend for a while. I’d like to add them as a named driver on my insurance policy. How much is this going to be?

“When you
add a named driver
to your insurance policy, you are accepting financial responsibility for them in the event of an accident with your car.
The cost to add your friend depends on risk. If your friend is a teenager or doesn’t have a
clean driving record
, it may cost more to add them.
If this is a temporary situation and your friend is maintaining their own insurance, it is usually free to add them as a driver to your policy.
To add them and determine the exact cost, you’ll need to give your insurance company your friend’s:
  • Driver’s license number
  • Date of birth
  • Current address
  • Past driving activity such as moving violations or accidents
Since you’re adding a driver, it might be a good time to see if you could get a cheaper policy as well. Any time you make changes to your insurance, you should always comparison shop.
