How much is a new car key?

My boyfriend and I have decided to be a one-car household to cut back on our emissions output. Since I have the newer car, he decided to sell his. We need a second set of keys for the car. How much will a new key cost?

Cutting back on your emissions output is a great way to show you care about our planet! It can definitely be an adjustment, but it’ll be worth it in the long run.
How much a new car key will cost varies greatly since there are so many different kinds of keys nowadays. But you can expect to spend anywhere from $50 to $350, depending on the type.
  • Basic key fobs: $50 to $110
  • Transponder keys: $150 to $225
  • Laser cut keys: $150 to $225
  • Switchblade keys: $150 to $350
  • Keyless entry remotes: $250 to $600
The dealership or locksmith will need the following to make a new key for you:
  • The year, make, and model of your car
  • Proof of ownership (registration and title)
  • A working key
