How much is a 2JZ engine swap? Is it worth it?

There’s a local race track in my hometown that hosts regular amateur track meets. It sounds like a lot of fun, and I want to set up my car better with a Toyota 2JZ. But how much a 2JZ engine swap, and is it worth it to upgrade from the 1JZ?

How much is a 2JZ engine swap? If you’re outsourcing this project to a mechanic, you’re looking at $15,000 to $20,000 per engine with reasonable modifications, and upwards of $50,000 per engine with more competitive mods. And we say “per engine” here because even at the amateur level, using multiple engines for one car is somewhat common.
If you already have a 1JZ and you’re just looking to have some win-or-lose racing fun, we’d say keep your 1JZ and modify it, and maybe buy a second 1JZ if your budget allows for that. The 2JZ is worth it if you want the competitive edge of the added horsepower and torque. Also, it’s worth noting the 1JZ is regarded as the better choice for drifting.
