How much insurance coverage for fires do I need to add to my house after renovations?

I did around $150,000 worth of renovations to my home. I want to cover my hard work in case of a fire. How much insurance coverage should I add?

“Congratulations on finishing some major renovations!
The coverage amount should be similar to or higher than the cost per square foot of homes in your area.
You probably want to add 150k on top of your existing dwelling coverage to cover the value you invested in your home. The dwelling needs to cover the replacement cost of the home and anything attached to the home. So the coverage may be higher than 150k.
To come up with an accurate quote, your insurance company will want to see all of the receipts of the work with a description of what was done. Your insurance agent will then calculate the exact amount once they know what changes were made.
While renovations and personalizing your home are one of the joys of homeownership, it can be pricey. If you feel that your current company increases your premium too much because of the renovations, you should shop around.
