How much highway taxes do electric cars contribute?

I’ve heard that in many places, EV drivers don’t pay the same kind of taxes as other drivers and I don’t think that’s fair! All cars that drive on the road should help pay for maintenance. How much do electric car drivers contribute to highway taxes?

We hear your concern. Many regions have tried to give incentives to help people switch but with more road use and fewer taxpayers its out of balance. To fix this, some states have tagged an extra $100+ fee on the annual EV registration payment.
Fuel tax is one of the ways the government helps to fund road maintenance projects. The federal government collects over $5 billion in taxes per year. But with the rising number of EVs on the road, gasoline taxes won’t fit the bill. In 2017, the state of Oregon created a voluntary program for all drivers called
OreGO
which allows drivers to pay US $0.018 cents per mile in return for being exempt from fuel tax and extra EV fees.
