How much energy does an electric car use per mile?

Hi! I have my sights set on buying myself a 2022 Mini Electric Hardtop for my birthday, but I’m not sure about its range. How can I tell how much energy an electric car uses per mile?

First off, Happy Birthday! And what a fun choice for an electric car! Shopping for cars is exciting, especially when you’re looking at a 2022 model with lots of awesome new standard features and great MPGe.
Here’s what we know about the energy electric cars use per mile:
  • Instead of measuring by miles per gallon, electric cars’ energy consumption is measured by kilowatt-hours per 100 miles (kWh/100 miles).
  • You can find your car’s rating in the owner’s manual or on your car’s EPA fuel economy sticker.
  • To calculate your cost of charging at home per 100 miles, you will need to multiply your car’s kWh/100 miles figure by the electricity rate (the cost per kWh).
  • When calculating, also consider the time of day you think you’ll be charging the most. This is key if you have a time-of-use plan, as using energy at peak hours will cost more.
For example, a typical
Tesla
uses about 34 kWh of electricity per 100 miles. The drive system for an electric car is only responsible for about 20 percent energy loss, much less than cars with internal combustion engines. Regenerative braking also allows these eco-friendly cars to reuse energy that would normally be lost.
Now that you know how to measure the amount of energy your new electric car will use per mile, you can determine if the 2022 Mini Electric Hardtop is the right fit for your lifestyle.
