How much electricity does car AC use?

We live in Texas and my mom always hates when I have the AC blasting in the car when I drive. It’s super hot but she says it uses up battery. How much electricity does car AC really use?

Texas can get really hot—we understand! That said your mom is right, the car’s heating and cooling systems use up a lot of energy and can affect the range. On average, AC uses about 3kWh of power but the exact number could change depending on the size, make, and age of your vehicle.
Even in your house, the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system uses up the most energy. The hotter (or colder) it is outside, the more work the vehicle has to do to maintain the desired cabin climate.
In extreme temperatures—both hot and cold—the EV battery may decrease in range. Studies have shown that when outside temperatures are in the 90-degree Fahrenheit range and the AC is on, the range may be reduced by almost 20%.
We get it, it gets super hot, but if you’re trying to conserve range, try turning it down a little bit or use the windows in the evening.
If you feeling a bit heated about your current insurance rates, we’ve got a solution.
