How much electricity do electric cars use while charging?

I’m trying to figure out where the best and fastest place to charge my EV is. Is it better to charge at home or is my time better spent using a public charging point? And how do I tell how much electricity my electric vehicle uses while it’s charging?

That’s a great question! While charging your
electric car
at home can be more convenient and cost-effective, it may take much longer than using a charging station—depending on the type of current.
Here’s what we know about the amount of electricity electric cars use while charging:
  • The amount of power your EV uses will depend on what type of current you’re using to charge. **Alternating current (AC) **is the most common type and is often the preference for home installation.
  • A Level 1 outlet produces power at 120-volt AC. A Level 2 charger offers consumers a higher voltage with 240-volt AC.
  • Direct Current (DC) is much faster and commonly found at public charging stations. The main ones to look out for are the CHAdeMO, CCS, and
    Tesla superchargers
    .
  • While you actually only need 15 amps to charge your EV, it’s not the most effective use of your time. You’ll find home chargers with around 40 amps and public charging stations using around 500 amps.
Now that you can choose the best charging options to fit your needs, you’ll be able to properly plan out your summer trips on the open road. Make sure overpriced car insurance doesn’t rain on your adventurous parade.
