How much does your electric bill go up if you charge an electric car at home?

I want to buy an EV eventually, but as a homeowner, I get hit pretty hard with property taxes and it can be hard to make ends meet sometimes. That’s why I don’t really know how I should prepare to budget for owning an EV. What should I expect to see on my electric bill if I’m charging my EV at home?

One of the perks of owning an EV is that they use your regular 110-volt wall outlets to charge their batteries. In most normal scenarios, unless you
install an upgraded charging station
at your residence, you shouldn’t expect to see more than an extra $30-60 tacked on to your bill.
Compare this to what you spend on gasoline every month. For most people who don’t work from home, an extra $30-60 is probably less than what they spend on gas for their commute to work.
Some people get creative when they’re home
charging their EV
, but sometimes that means they try to upgrade their charging methods the wrong way. One of the most common ways is to attempt using a washer-dryer outlet (which is 240-volts) in order to plug a Level 2 charger in. But this is hazardous—washer-dryer outlets aren’t designed for Level 2 chargers and can cause sparks, or an electrical fire if you’re not careful.
If you’re still on the fence about buying an EV, that’s normal. Many of us are—it’s a new technology, and that’s still a little pricier than most other vehicles. But in the long run, you can expect to save quite a bit on maintaining an EV, which is always a plus. You can also save money on insuring your new EV by using the
