How much does it cost to add my child to my car insurance?

My son is going to start driving soon, and I've decided to add him under my policy instead of getting him his own. I’ve heard some rumors about car insurance for high schoolers being expensive, though, and I want to make sure I’m not paying an arm and a leg. How much will it cost to add my child to my policy?

Answer
What a big milestone for your son! Adding him to your policy might cost you a bit, but there are ways to save on car insurance costs when adding a teen driver.
First, you should speak to your insurance agent and get a quote for your revised policy coverages so you can be prepared financially. The recommended liability coverage for a teen driver is 100/300/100, or a $100,000 limit for bodily injury per person, a $300,000 limit for bodily injury per accident, and a $100,000 limit for property damage per accident.
Be sure to ask about insurance discounts for your teen as well. Most insurance companies offer good student discounts for kids with a B average. There are also away discounts for students who attend college over 100 miles away without their car. This ensures they are still covered for when they do come home to drive.
If your insurance skyrockets after adding your son, you may also want to shop around for a new policy. To do this easily, check out the Jerry app—we’ll get you customized quotes from over 50 of the nation’s leading companies so you can choose the rate and coverage that works for you.
Happy driving!
