How much does a new car key cost? I lost one of the little remote keys to my car and I need to replace it.

Generally, dealership key replacement costs range from $50 to $600. The amount you pay will depend on the type of car you drive and the type of key it uses.
In general, parts for affordable domestic vehicles—like
Fords
and
Chevrolets
—are less expensive. Parts for luxury car brands—like
Mercedes-Benz
and
BMW
—tend to be a bit more pricey.
Here are some general price ranges for different types of keys:
  • Basic keys for older vehicles with no computer chips or special features: $50 to $100
  • Laser-cut transponder keys: $150 to $200
  • Key fobs:  $50 to $150
  • Switchblade key fobs: $200 to $300
  • Smart keys used for remote keyless entry: $250 to $500+
Keep in mind: Costs will likely be a bit cheaper if you have a spare key to work from. Check with a local locksmith to see if they can replace it, or order a new replacement through your car’s local dealership.
