How much does a Chrysler Sebring weigh?

I recently got some quotes for car insurance for my 2009 Chrysler Sebring and the premiums seemed really high for such an old car. When I asked, one company said it was because lighter cars are more prone to damage in an accident. How much does my Sebring weigh and does it really affect safety that much?

In short, yes – your car’s weight does have an impact on how safe it is. For example, your
Chrysler Sebring
will probably weigh somewhere between 3,310 and 3,959 pounds. An average mid-sized SUV will weigh around 5,000 pounds. If you were in an accident with someone driving a 5,000-pound SUV, it doesn’t look good for your Sebring.
Here are some sobering statistics on crashes involving smaller vehicles colliding with larger ones:
  • Death or severe injury is 28% more likely in a crash with an SUV and small car
  • Trucks are 2 ½ times more likely to kill the driver of a smaller vehicle in the event of a crash
  • For every 100 pounds difference in vehicle weight, the risk of death or severe injury increases by 1.6%.
Car insurance
companies decide on rates by factoring in how much of a risk they’re taking to insure a vehicle. Since the damage to lighter cars in an accident is typically more severe, some companies may raise premiums to insure them.
