There are definitely budget-friendly EV options available! Cheaper electric cars price on average in the mid-$20,000 to $30,000 range.
Right now the cheapest fully-electric vehicles on the EV market are the Nissan Leaf and the Mini Cooper SE. Another option to save money on an EV is purchasing it used.
