How much are toll roads in Florida?

My family and I are planning a road trip down to Florida in August and I know we will hit some tolls. How much are the toll roads so I can be prepared with cash?

Toll roads in Florida
start at just over $1, but it depends on the distance traveled and the type of car. Travel more than a few miles on a toll road and you’ll pay somewhere between $5 and $15.
Your cost to use toll roads in Florida depends on these key factors:
  • Type of vehicle: Fewer axles and smaller cars like your passenger vehicle pay less.
  • Distance: Travel a shorter distance and pay less.
  • High-traffic areas:
    Driving in Orlando
on the high-demand 408 (near the theme parks) triggers a toll, whereas Highway 1 near St. Augustine is not a toll road.
  • Transponder: If you have a SunPass or other transponder (like E-ZPass), you’ll pay a discounted rate compared to the toll-by-plate rates.
One option for your family’s
road trip
is to get a SunPass transponder and set up a prepaid account, which means you’ll pay cheaper rates on
all toll roads
and the money will come out of your account.
Another option is to stick with the toll-by-plate system, where the system will photograph your license plate and bill you by mail. However, if you will be traveling outside of electronic-only tolling areas, you’ll need change for cash booths (and exact change at unmanned cash booths, unless you want to pay by check or money transfer later on).
Finally, be aware that many toll roads in Florida are converting to all-electronic payments, aka no cash. The Miami section of the Turnpike and many other locations near Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, and Broward County are all-electronic and don’t accept cash.
